The Lawrence Chan Blog

I have diverse interest in many things from science and technology to martial arts and ancient health practices. Obviously, discussion of these topics should be done within my own blog as oppose to keeping them here. Hence my blog is created so that I can have a venue to express my creativity and thoughts on my other interests. For those of you who share similar interests, you can check out my site TheLawrenceChan.com

Due to the sheer volume of articles I have written about trading, many of which are trading related yet not technically in line with what DaytradingBias.com is offering, they have to be split from my blog into yet another site. Hence for my non-technical writings about trading, videos I have curated from various sources that I think are useful for traders and my reviews of trading related products, you can find them at the site Essence of Trading

The reason why I picked the Tai Chi picture above for this page is best explained by my article Tai Chi Traders in a World of Chaos at Essence of Trading.

Below are the old blog posts that were originally posted here. To avoid broken links from other sites, I have decided to keep them here.

Commenting New Feature (and update on fixes)

2013 Jan 15 Tue 23:16:00 | by Lawrence

A new feature is added enabling you all to quote from the articles easily, making discussion more engaging.

To activate the feature, just highlight the text in any article, a quote button will popup allowing you to click that and the text will be clipped for you with all the necessary shortcode to go with it in your comment.

Update on issues with the site since upgrading to WP 3.5:

After several days of hard work, the issue with live commenting is resolved.

So real-time commentary should function properly with auto update and the quote button should show up properly at the places they are supposed to be.

The problem of updating the STOPD Levels is resolved as well.

Other minor visual issues are also taken care of.

Site is now ready for the new features I have planned.

Seriously, I am very happy that this major site upgrade has caused only minor issues so far. It makes me having even more respect to the programming team at WordPress.

To quote the WordPress.org slogan,

"Code Is Poetry"

My Trusted Server Went Down … RIP

2013 Jan 13 Sun 17:39:30 | by Lawrence

iStock_000018339157XSmallI usually remote access to my server for my charting and checking on my automated systems regularly. Well, today the server failed to auto report its status thru SMS. I knew it is going to be bad. Just not this bad.

Looks like the hardware is toasted at this point. And the drive I manage to pull out of the computer got the infamous Windows $MFT corruption beyond repair. Luckily I know I can recover all the data files on the drive.

Told my SO that I have this f$#ked up situation.

"You get an excuse to buy the 8-core machine now, don’t you?"

Will just stop my models for now and wait for a new computer. No point rushing to setup a temporary gig for a week or two and then moving that onto a new server.

In the meantime, I am setting up my home computer to track the markets using a copy of the files from my backup. Will see how that goes.

This incident is giving me several ideas on tech tips for traders. Good for several pieces at least.

How do I know so quickly that the drive is beyond repair?

Test Disk – A free tool for fixing most of the known issues related to all kinds of OS and file formats. If it cannot fix the problem, it means it is either beyond repair or it is going to be very costly. i.e. you can always seek data recovery lab to help you, you know?

How do I know I can recover my data files from the driver?

Active@ Boot Disk – a set of recovery tools including imaging, bootable USD to deal with data backup and recovery. No relations with this firm. Just a satisfied customer.

Back to set up my charts and stuff now. Will be a long night.

Sign Up Issue Resolved

2013 Jan 11 Fri 20:32:39 | by Lawrence

A very frustrated owner of my eBooks told me the sign up process for the membership to the site was broken. He could not complete his registration following the link from the registration email because that page is telling him to login first. It is really embarrassing that we failed to catch the issue when we upgraded our membership system to the latest release right after new year.

I have resolved this new member’s problem manually myself.

It did not take long for us to track down the problem and have it fixed.

For those who tried to sign up over the past week, we have already resend a new registration completion email out. If you receive this new email, just follow the link and you should be able to complete your registration without problem.

I apologize for the frustration it has caused to those who tried to sign up over the past week.
