The Lawrence Chan Blog

I have diverse interest in many things from science and technology to martial arts and ancient health practices. Obviously, discussion of these topics should be done within my own blog as oppose to keeping them here. Hence my blog is created so that I can have a venue to express my creativity and thoughts on my other interests. For those of you who share similar interests, you can check out my site TheLawrenceChan.com

Due to the sheer volume of articles I have written about trading, many of which are trading related yet not technically in line with what DaytradingBias.com is offering, they have to be split from my blog into yet another site. Hence for my non-technical writings about trading, videos I have curated from various sources that I think are useful for traders and my reviews of trading related products, you can find them at the site Essence of Trading

The reason why I picked the Tai Chi picture above for this page is best explained by my article Tai Chi Traders in a World of Chaos at Essence of Trading.

Below are the old blog posts that were originally posted here. To avoid broken links from other sites, I have decided to keep them here.

Just an update on where things are in terms of site development at this point in time.

It’s been couple of months since I started my coaching / mentoring service. To call this two months hectic is an understatement. I ended up spending at least double the amount of time I planned to. I have to say I enjoy it much as I get to see positive changes happening to these traders.

That’s the reason I am running out of time to write articles since my schedule was all messed up. As I learn my ropes in managing my time on the coaching side, things will get back to normal.

On the development side of trading signals, I have many requests for recent trades and performance of the the trading signals to be posted on the site. It is a reasonable request but it also takes a lot of changes to the existing designs to automate the process. I still haven’t make up my mind on whether going all automated or just doing some kind of manual posting monthly.

The trouble with performance reporting is that the biases and models I published are created with customization in mind. The traders can learn about the biases and understand the risk profile of the models and adapt them to fit their personal trading styles. If I publish the recent trades and performance, which versions of them that I should go with?

The posting of these reports could be more confusing than not.

On the other front, next step of my plan is to release my trading signals and models based on custom tick indices. This set of models are very different from whatever I have posted so far on the site. They are heavily intraday focus and exploit smaller timeframe biases.

And I have not forgotten about forex. If all goes well, will release several intraday swing plays on the majors. They are long delayed and I feel bad about it because I promised last year to roll things out quickly.

Now that I am settling down with my new routines and schedules, I think I can manage the long list of things that has to be done. My goal is to accomplish as much as possible this quarter. This will keep me very busy for sure.

Happy Easter and Name of DaytradingBias.com

2015 Apr 3 Fri 12:06:30 | by Lawrence

Happy Easter Everyone from Muskoka!

I am taking a break from home at Muskoka right now. Muskoka is up north from Toronto and you can see that it is still frozen up here. Looks like it will take at least a few more weeks before fishing is possible up here.

Interesting question raised by several new members of the site – what is the name of daytradingbias.com?

It turns out I do not really have a name for the site at all.

I guess I should think of one.

Basil Flowers

2015 Mar 30 Mon 14:32:19 | by Lawrence

I was not a person by any measure having green thumb. However, I was left with the responsibility to take care of a number of plants. Yet I have no idea what I was doing several months ago. All I thought is that if I keep watering them, they will be fine. Of course, it does not work that way at all.

Spring has arrived and the basil in my place has grown flowers. I did not notice the flowers until this morning. Solid proof I am still an idiot with plants.

Paul Tudor Jones and Just Capital

2015 Mar 19 Thu 15:31:27 | by Lawrence

Paul Tudor Jones made a presentation at TED2015 on the concept of justness and the necessity to expand the definition of capitalism.

Here is the blog entry from Ted talking about his presentation,

Very interesting concept and I look forward to watch the presentation when it becomes available.

The Cardinal Climax: My Personal Account Of Its Impacts

2015 Mar 14 Sat 9:10:06 | by Lawrence

Cardinal Climax is a term coined by astrologists when Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto pretty much forming a big square in the sky at specific positions during the past 7 to 8 years for which it will officially end by this coming week. From my way of describing the cardinal climax, it is obvious that I am not a fan of astrology. It was, however, brought to my attention by a family friend whom insisted I read about it. Here is my personal account of events vs. the symbolization of the astrological configuration in the sky.

At the start of the Cardinal Climax, that was in fact the time my girlfriend’s health turning very bad and she was pretty much giving up hope. I have to give up my software business, halt all trading and focus on taking care of her. Somehow my birthdate falls into one of those prescribed by astrologers as deeply affected by the astrological event. And the implication of drastic change in one’s direction of life did happened to me and my girlfriend.

And then some of the key changing periods mentioned by the astrologers during this time also matches episodes of emergency room visits and complex surgeries. Of which, during this time period, I get to sit down and summarize my understanding of the markets. New ideas on trading technologies emerged as I crossed my field of specialization into learning as much as I can on medical science during this time. This conceptual breakthrough in my mind fulfills another implication by the astrological event.

My girlfriend passed away late last year. As I am going through this mourning period, my understanding of the market internals has deepen yet into a whole new level. It is as if I am transformed into a different person as this Cardinal Climax is coming to its conclusion. This is also part of the implications of the astrological event that those deeply affected will become very different.

Could this be coincidence or the planets really have a say in our lives?

I don’t know. I guess everyone has to decide for themselves in what they would believe in. I am just providing an account of my drastic life experience here.

Personally, I will not start to believe in astrology. Being a day trader, we have to depend our decision making on evidence and their known short term impacts. If I change my belief system, it will affect my ability to react correctly.

On the other hand, if this astrological event did impact my life, I am glad that this damn Cardinal Climax is finally over.
